Remains of native American transgender woman found in Oklahoma 6 years after she went missing

The remains of a native American transgender woman who went missing six years ago were found in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, last week, according to local authorities.

Aubrey Dameron was last seen on March 9, 2019, near Grove, which is part of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

This Wednesday, the Quapaw Nation Marshal Service announced that they had responded to a call “regarding the discovery of human remains located near South 565 Road and East 30 Road, north of Commerce in rural Ottawa County, Oklahoma.”


A statement from the marshal service read, “Due to the condition of the remains, they appeared to have been at the location for an undetermined period of time.”

Remains reported on January 31

According to the authorities, the call was received on January 31. After being examined by the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office, the remains were identified as those of Dameron.

The Marshal Service conveyed, “Sincere condolences to Aubrey’s family and friends, as the past six (6) long years of searching for Aubrey have come to an end.”

Remains found 40 minutes away from last known location


The area where the remains were recovered is nearly a 40-minute drive from the location of Dameron's last sighting, according to NBC News.

Following the identification of the remains, a statement issued by Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. read, “Our thoughts and prayers are with her Aunt Pam and Uncle Christian, who always put Aubrey’s missing persons case, and all MMIP cases, at the forefront where it belonged.”

Tribute to Aubrey Dameron

Hoskin Jr’s statement, quoted by NBC News, honoured Aubrey’s pride in her Cherokee heritage, acknowledging her bright future that was tragically cut short. The statement also highlighted the efforts of the Marshals, who conducted multiple searches, erected billboards, and raised awareness about her case.

The investigation into Dameron’s death is ongoing, with the Marshal Service not yet revealing the cause or manner of death in its media release.
