On average, each interview process took about two months from screening call to offer. One key detail stood out: the role he accepted came from cold outreach to the owner of the firm on LinkedIn, not a traditional job posting.

What actually worked in his job search

In the comments, James shared the exact approach he followed. His daily cadence was five customized, tailored applications, no mass applying. He avoided what he called “reaching for the stars” roles and focused on jobs he realistically qualified for.

For every company, he contacted at least three people using LinkedIn messages, emails, and even phone calls when numbers were available. He prioritized mutual connections, alumni, friends, and family links who could pass along his résumé.

He also reached out to 10 recruiters per day in his field and city, calling this the biggest driver of attention. Two of his three offers came from companies that never posted a formal job opening, and the third came after he walked in and dropped off a physical résumé.

Community reactions and questions

The post drew heavy engagement. One user asked if LinkedIn Premium was necessary. James confirmed that yes, he invested in LinkedIn Premium to enable cold outreach. Another commenter, recently laid off, asked how to avoid spiraling, prompting advice to set small, manageable daily goals instead of overapplying.
