Two huge collisions involving multiple drives led to the suspension of the ongoing British Grand Prix, as per media reports. Red flags were raised at Silverstone after Zhou Guanyu’s Alpha Romeo flipped over a tyre barrier at Turn 1. The accident involved multiple drivers, resulting in two huge collisions, which led to Zhou’s Alpha Romeo rolling through the run-off space before flipping off the barriers. Thankfully, no one was severely injured.

Per a replay shown on ESPN, Pierre Gasly was cramped between Zhou Guanyu and George Russell, and subsequently collided with Russell. Resultingly, Russell’s Mercedes was pitched into Zhou’s Alpha Romeo, causing the horrific accident. According to Zhou, the Formula One halo cockpit protection device played a critical role in saving his life in the terrifying first lap at Silverstone. The device has also saved Charles Leclerc from a grave injury in the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix, the same year Halo was introduced.

After Zhou’s terrible flip, Williams Racing driver Alex Albon hit the brakes for the initial crash, causing Sebastian Vettel to pile into the back of the Williams. The collision threw Alex into the pit wall before he bounced back on the track and crashed into Esteban Ocon and Yuki Tsunoda. While Esteban and Yuki were able to continue, Zhou and Alex were rushed to the hospital on stretchers, though both of them were conscious.

Following the two incidents, red flags were raised and the emergency crew rushed to the track. Subsequently, the race was restarted at 15:56 local time.

The British Grand Prix has been rocked by the “Just Stop Oil” protests, a campaign against fossil fuel consumption. The protestors stormed the tracks after the red flags were raised and sat down on the circuit. Eventually, the police arrived and swiftly cleared them away from the track. The 4-time world champion Vettel has been one of the strongest supporters of the Just Stop Oil campaign from the F1 fraternity.
