Shanahan said that both the players won't be available due to soft tissue injuries last week, and they would take a call the week after. Both the players are expected to be available for the season opener against the Chicago Bears on September 11. Mitchell continued in the position of running back as he did last season during the camp's first two weeks.
JaMycal Hasty, Tyrion Davis-Price and Trey Sermon will be the choices for the running back position for the time Mitchell is out. On Friday, Sermon started and finished with six carries for 11 yards. Price did the most work with 10 attempts for 36 yards. Hasty got 36 yards on five carries.
Jeff Wilson Jr., the veteran back, did not play despite being on the roster. Other key players that did not feature were the tight end George Kittle, receivers Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, linebacker Fred Warner, end Nick Bosa, and left tackle, Trent Williams. Mitchell was a sixth round pick in 2021 and set a rushing record for a rookie last season with 963 yards. He missed six games due to various injuries but still got five touchdowns.
Mitchell hoped to return to camp without any major issue after suffering an injury offseason. Shanahan said Drake Jackson would have to go for further testing after he got a shoulder injury in Friday's game.
