Ray Lewis III, the son of two-time Super Bowl champion Ray Lewis, died of a suspected overdose Wednesday, police said.
Lewis, 28, was found unconscious in a bedroom at a home in Casselberry, Fla., according to the Casselberry Police Department. Officers were called to the home after a person in the home called 911 to report an overdose.

A person in the home was attempting CPR on Lewis when an officer arrived. The officer was advised by a second person that Lewis needed the opioid-overdose antidote naloxone, which the officer administered using Narcan, according to the police report.

The antidote and further life-saving attempts were unsuccessful. Police said Lewis was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

The police report said the evidence and witness accounts show the incident to be a tragic accident.

Lewis' death is the latest in a series of high-profile overdose deaths in the NFL. In 2016, former Baltimore Ravens star player and Lewis' teammate, Junior Seau, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after years of struggling with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease that has been linked to repeated head injuries.

In 2017, former San Francisco 49ers star player and Lewis' friend, Jovan Belcher, shot and killed his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.

Lewis' death is a reminder of the dangers of opioid addiction, which has become an epidemic in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 70,000 people died from drug overdoses in the United States in 2017, the most ever recorded in a single year.
