Rare shark attack: Russian citizen gets killed in Egypt’s Red Sea

In a rare and deadly shark attack, a Russian man was mauled to death on Thursday off one of the Red Sea resorts in Egypt, media reports said, citing the Egyptian and Russian authorities.

A tiger shark killed the man in the waters near the city of Hurghada, Egypt’s Environment Ministry said.

After the incident, a 74-kilometer (46-mile) stretch of the coastline around the city of Hurghada was closed by authorities until Sunday.


Later, the ministry said that the shark has been caught. It also said that it was examining it in a laboratory to find out the reasons for the attack.

The man has been identified as a Russian citizen by the Russian Consulate in Hurghada.

A video of the attack, which was circulating online, shows a man in the water before being attacked by a shark present near him, then being dragged under the water.

“It happened in a second. Rescuers reacted very quickly. For some reason, I immediately felt that it was a shark. I immediately jumped up and started shouting: ‘Sharks, sharks! Save yourself!’ Nobody understood yet,” a witness told REN-TV of Russia.

“It’s a terrible thing, the remains of this guy are over there. I’m shaking. Right in front of my eyes, the shark ate that guy. I think I need a drink. I feel really bad,” another witness said.

In a statement, which was posted on its official channel on the Telegram messaging application on Thursday, the Russia’s Consulate General in the city asked the Russian tourists to be vigilant when in the water and adhere to any swimming bans imposed by the local authorities.
