Rare footage of the Titanic, which was once believed to be unsinkable, has been released, almost 38 years after the discovery of the wreck at the bottom of the North Atlantic for the first time.

In 1985, the scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, located in Massachusetts, discovered the remains of the renowned ocean liner and subsequently, returned a year later to conduct an investigation thousands of feet below the surface using a three-person submersible.

Released on Wednesday, the footage captured in July 1986 represents the first time that humans laid eyes on the sunken ship since it sank in 1912. The video is a compilation of footage from Alvin, the manned submersible, and Jason Jr., the second remotely operated vessel that was used to explore the interior of the wreck.

To coincide with the 25th anniversary of the James Cameron movie "Titanic," which broke box-office records and depicted the story of the ship's doomed maiden voyage, the exceptional video footage was released this week.

James Cameron, Titanic’s filmmaker, said that more than a century after the loss of Titanic, the human stories embodied in the great ship continue to resonate.

In the video, Alvin can be seen approaching the ship and exploring its bow, before ultimately parking on the deck. The footage also features glimpses of the chief officer's cabin and the ship's promenade.

The opulent Titanic was operated by the White Star Line shipping company, and began its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912, departing from Southampton, England and heading across the Atlantic to New York.

The Titanic met its tragic end in the North Atlantic after colliding with an iceberg. Out of the over 2,200 passengers and crew on board, only around 700 people survived the disaster.

Attempts to locate and salvage the wreckage began immediately after the sinking, but the immense size of the search area and technological limitations made it a challenging task. However, in 1985, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) was able to develop advanced imaging technologies that allowed them to take the first photographs of the sunken ship, which lay at a depth of over 12,400 feet. Subsequently, in 1986, the WHOI-led expedition returned to further explore the wreck using a manned submersible.
