Rafael Nadal is set to make his tennis comeback after a year-long hiatus at the Brisbane International in the initial week of January. The 22-time Grand Slam champion's last match was a second-round loss to American Mackenzie McDonald at the 2023 Australian Open, where he struggled with a hip injury.

Nadal announced through social media that he will make his return to the ATP Tour in Australia next month, marking the start of his final year.

In a video shared on X, the 37-year-old stated, that after a year away from competition, it's time for his return.


Nadal said he will be in Brisbane during the first week of January.

Nadal is gearing up for the Australian Open in Melbourne later this month by participating in the Brisbane International.

He has previously clinched wins at the Australian Open in 2009 and 2022. In the 2022 Australian Open final, Nadal staged a remarkable comeback from two sets down to defeat Daniil Medvedev. Following this win, he secured his 14th French Open title later in the year, setting a record.

Since that time, the Spaniard has not clinched any major victory and faces a limited window of four more chances before his planned retirement at the end of the campaign.

Nadal has also expressed a strong desire to compete for Spain in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

During his period of injury absence, he dropped to the 633rd position in the global rankings. However, he qualifies for a protected ranking as he hasn't participated in any event for a minimum of six months.

In a recent statement, Novak Djokovic expressed his desire for at least one more match against his formidable rival, Nadal.
