Federer had been the Wimbledon champion the previous five years in a row and had defeated Nadal in previous meetings. Nadal, on the other hand, had just won the French open for fourth time in a row. But Nadal managed to snatch a win in a 4 hours and 48 minutes of play, defeating Federer 6–4, 6–4, 6–7(5–7), 6–7(8–10), 9–7.

In 2017, both Federer after both had come back from extended injury layoffs. It was their record ninth meeting in a Grand Slam final. In a gruelling 3 hour and 38 minutes match, Federer defeated Nadal - notably, its the first time he defeated Nadal at the Australian Open.

In his last match, Roger Federer teamed up with Rafael Nadal in doubles at the Laver Cup. Unfortunately, Federer was denied a fairytale ending with a doubles defeat at the Laver Cup. The two former world number ones won the first set but were defeated by Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock 4-6, 7-6 (7/2), 11-9.
