Rafael Nadal, the defending men's champion of the Australian Open, narrowly avoided becoming the first defending champion to lose in the first round since his coach, Carlos Moya, defeated Boris Becker 25 years ago.
Although Nadal's performance was not at its best, he managed to secure a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over 21-year-old Jack Draper in a match that lasted over three and a half hours.
Nadal came into the match with a 0-2 record in 2023 and six losses in his previous seven outings. After a slow start, Nadal found himself even with Draper at one set apiece. Nadal appeared to be gaining the upper hand, taking advantage of Draper's cramps in the 85-degree Fahrenheit heat, but Draper managed to break Nadal's serve in the fourth set. However, Nadal then won the next five games to secure the victory.
Nadal said that he "needs a victory", and that's "the main thing" for him, "Doesn't matter the way," he further added.
Nadal, who is the top seed due to Carlos Alcaraz's injury, is competing in his 67th Grand Slam tournament. Draper, currently ranked 38th, was making his fourth appearance in a major tournament and his best showing was reaching the third round at the US Open last September. Draper has also struggled in hot conditions in the past, collapsing during his ATP Tour debut at the Miami Open in 2021.
