Shirley Chisholm early life

Shirley Chisholm was born Shirley St. Hill on November 30, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York. Her father was from British Guiana (now Guyana) and her mother from Barbados. She grew up in Brooklyn and spent some time in Barbados. Chisholm graduated from Brooklyn College in 1946 with a B.A. She later completed an M.A. in elementary education from Columbia University in 1951. She worked as a nursery school teacher and became director of the Friends Day Nursery in Brooklyn.

Chisholm began her political career as a member of the New York State legislature from 1964 to 1968. In 1968, she ran for the U.S. House of Representatives, defeating civil rights leader James Farmer. Her campaign slogan was “Fighting Shirley Chisholm—Unbought and Unbossed.” Chisholm served in the House from 1969 to 1983. She opposed the Vietnam War, weapons development, and supported full employment.

In 1972, Chisholm ran for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. She won 152 delegates before withdrawing. She was also a founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus. Throughout her career, she supported the Equal Rights Amendment and legalized abortions. She wrote two autobiographies: Unbought and Unbossed (1970) and The Good Fight (1973).

Shirley Chisholm later life and legacy

After leaving Congress, Chisholm taught at Mount Holyoke College and Spelman College. She declined the offer to serve as U.S. ambassador to Jamaica in 1993 due to health reasons. Shirley Chisholm passed away on January 1, 2005, in Florida. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
