Plato and the Forms

Plato also made three trips to Syracuse in Sicily, although the historical details and the authenticity of some related letters remain disputed.Plato became connected with Dion, who was related to Dionysius the Elder, the ruler of Syracuse. Plato apparently tried, at Dion’s request, to educate Dionysius the Younger in line with the philosopher-king idea described in The Republic. The project did not succeed. Dion was later murdered during political instability.

Plato’s works have traditionally been arranged into 36 works, with the Letters counted as one. This arrangement is associated with Thrasyllus of Alexandria, who flourished in the first century CE.The exact order in which Plato wrote his works cannot be established. Scholars have used changes in philosophical content and stylometry to develop a general division into early, middle and late works.
Plato’s works include Apology, Charmides, Cratylus, Critias, Crito, Euthydemus, Euthyphro, Gorgias, Laches, Laws, Meno, Parmenides, Phaedo, Phaedrus, Philebus, Protagoras, Sophist, Statesman, Symposium, The Republic, Theaetetus and Timaeus, among others. His works also include letters and epigrams.
Why translating Plato is difficult?
Plato’s original manuscripts did not survive. His writings were copied by hand across centuries. The copying process could introduce errors, which is why different manuscript traditions sometimes contain different readings.Ancient Greek writing also did not use modern word divisions, punctuation or the distinction between capital and lowercase letters. Later scholars added these features while preparing editions. Translators must also make choices because some Greek sentences can have different grammatical meanings.
