In Budapest, he developed the principle of the rotating magnetic field. He also developed plans for an induction motor. This became part of his work on alternating current.


Tesla’s work with Edison and Westinghouse

In 1882, Tesla began working in Paris for the Continental Edison Company. In 1883, while working in Strassburg, he built his first induction motor after working hours. Tesla moved to the United States in 1884. He arrived in New York with four cents, some of his poems and calculations for a flying machine.

He first worked for Thomas Edison. Their backgrounds and methods were different, and they eventually separated. In May 1888, George Westinghouse bought the patent rights to Tesla’s polyphase system of alternating-current dynamos, transformers and motors.

This contributed to the conflict between Edison’s direct-current system and the Tesla-Westinghouse alternating-current system. The alternating-current approach later became widely used.


The Tesla coil and electrical experiments

Tesla established his own laboratory and continued his experiments. His work included electrical resonance, lighting and experiments related to shadowgraphs. His experiments were similar in some ways to work later associated with Wilhelm Röntgen and X-rays.

In 1891, Tesla invented the Tesla coil. It became widely used in radio technology and later in television sets and other electronic equipment. Tesla also used public demonstrations to address concerns about alternating current. During some demonstrations, he allowed electricity to pass through his body while lamps were lit. That year, Tesla also became a United States citizen.




Chicago and Niagara Falls projects

In 1893, Westinghouse used Tesla’s alternating-current system to light the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The project helped the company secure the contract for the first power machinery at Niagara Falls. The installation carried power to Buffalo by 1896.

The project included Tesla’s name and patent numbers. These developments showed how an idea that had faced competition and disagreement could later become part of a power system.


Wireless power and the Colorado Springs experiments

In 1898, Tesla announced a teleautomatic boat controlled remotely. When people questioned the claim, he demonstrated it before a crowd at Madison Square Garden. Tesla later worked in Colorado Springs from May 1899 until early 1900.

There, he studied what he called terrestrial stationary waves. He believed Earth could act as a conductor and resonate at a particular electrical frequency. He also lit 200 lamps without wires from a distance of 40 km, or 25 miles. His experiments produced electrical discharges measuring 41 metres, or 135 feet. At one point, Tesla believed he had received signals from another planet. Some scientific journals criticised the claim.


The wireless tower project and financial problems

After returning to New York in 1900, Tesla began building a wireless broadcasting tower on Long Island. American financier J. Pierpont Morgan provided $150,000 in capital. Tesla said he secured the money by assigning 51 percent of his patent rights in telephony and telegraphy to Morgan.

Tesla planned to use the project for worldwide communication. He expected it to transmit pictures, messages, weather warnings and stock reports. The project was later abandoned because of a financial panic, labour problems and Morgan’s withdrawal of support.

Tesla regarded the failure as his greatest defeat. The episode also relates to the meaning of his quote. A project can fail to produce its intended immediate result, but the underlying idea can still influence later work.


Tesla’s later years and legacy

Tesla later worked on turbines and other projects. His lack of money meant that some ideas remained in his notebooks. In 1915, Tesla was disappointed after a report said that he and Edison would share the Nobel Prize. The report was incorrect.

After Tesla died in 1943, his papers, letters, diplomas, honours and laboratory notes were taken into custody as alien property. They later passed to his nephew, Sava Kosanovich, and were eventually housed at the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade.

Hundreds of people attended his funeral at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. Three Nobel Prize recipients paid tribute to Tesla and described him as an important figure in the development of modern technology.
