Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck was born on April 23, 1858, in Kiel, Germany, according to Britannica. He came from a well-educated family, and his father was a law professor at the University of Kiel. Planck was the sixth child in the family. When he was nine years old, his father got a job at the University of Munich, and the family moved there. Planck studied at the famous Maximilian Gymnasium school in Munich.

A teacher named Hermann Müller encouraged his interest in physics and mathematics. Even though he liked many subjects, Planck finally decided to study physics instead of music or languages. Music was still important to him, and he was an excellent pianist with perfect pitch. He also loved nature, hiking, and long walks in the mountains.

Education and early career

Planck joined the University of Munich in 1874 to study physics. Later he studied for a year at the University of Berlin between 1877 and 1878, as stated by Britannica. He was not very impressed by lectures from famous scientists like Hermann von Helmholtz and Gustav Kirchhoff. Instead, he learned a lot by studying books on thermodynamics by Rudolf Clausius. Planck earned his PhD in 1879 at only 21 years old.


The next year he completed his Habilitation thesis and became a lecturer. In 1885, he became an associate professor at the University of Kiel. In 1889, he moved to the University of Berlin, where he worked with top scientists. By 1892, he was promoted to full professor. Planck stayed in Berlin for most of his scientific career.

Big scientific discovery – Quantum theory

Planck was deeply interested in thermodynamics and energy laws. His research focused on the second law of thermodynamics. This research later helped him discover a new idea called energy quanta. In 1900, Planck introduced the idea that energy is released in tiny packets. These packets are now called quanta. He also discovered an important constant known today as Planck’s constant (h).

His work explained blackbody radiation, which scientists were struggling to understand at that time. The formula he created became known as Planck’s Radiation Law. This discovery started quantum theory, which later changed modern physics.

How other scientists expanded his idea

At first, many scientists did not fully understand or accept the idea of quanta. In 1905, Albert Einstein expanded Planck’s idea and suggested that light itself can act like particles. These particles later became known as photons. In 1907, Einstein used quantum ideas to explain heat behavior in solids. In 1913, Niels Bohr used quantum theory to explain the structure of the hydrogen atom. These discoveries helped build modern quantum physics.

Nobel prize and achievements

Planck’s discovery became very important in science. In 1918, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for creating quantum theory. His work changed how scientists understand atoms and subatomic particles. Quantum theory and relativity together became the two main scientific theories of the 20th century. Planck also supported Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

Leadership and influence

Planck became permanent secretary of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in 1912. From 1930 to 1937, he served as president of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society. His opinions were highly respected by scientists in Germany, as stated Britannica. He helped bring Einstein to Berlin to work with German scientists.

Difficult times and personal tragedies

Planck’s life was also filled with many personal tragedies. His first wife, Marie Merck, died in 1909. His son Karl died during World War I in 1916. One daughter Margarete died during childbirth in 1917. His second daughter Emma also died in childbirth in 1919. During World War II, his Berlin house was destroyed by bombing in 1944. His younger son Erwin was executed by the Gestapo in 1945 for involvement in a plot against Adolf Hitler.
