A Baptist Minster and an iconic civil rights leader during the peak of anti- racism movement in fifties’ United States, Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. Junior was shot dead on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, as stated by Britannica, but not before ending legal segregation of Black Americans in the U.S.

Coming from a line of preachers, King’s father and grandfather were both church ministers. He grew up on Auburn Avenue, known as “Black Wall Street.” He experienced racism early, including losing a white friend due to segregation. His grandmother’s death deeply affected him emotionally.

King entered Morehouse College at age 15. He studied religion after considering medicine and law. He was inspired by Morehouse president Benjamin Mays. He graduated in 1948 and chose to enter the ministry. He studied nonviolence and theology at Crozer Seminary. He earned a doctorate from Boston University in 1955, as mentioned by Britannica.


King’s fame transcended his era, with even a whole day—Martin Luther King Jr. Day—being celebrated every January. Memorials, streets, and schools are named after him, making him a beacon of justice from whom anti- racism movements have drawn inspiration.
