Every new idea has to survive two tests: whether it can actually work, and whether other people are willing to believe that it can. For inventors, the second test can sometimes be harder. More than a century before computers became part of everyday life, English mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage was proposing machines made of thousands of mechanical components that could perform calculations automatically. His ideas were so ambitious that even people who understood their potential could question whether they were practical.

Babbage captured that frustration with a wonderfully sarcastic comparison involving a potato-peeling machine and a pineapple.

Born in 1791 in London, Babbage developed an early fascination with mathematics. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, and became dissatisfied with the mathematical teaching he encountered there. Along with fellow students John Herschel and George Peacock, he helped establish the Analytical Society, which promoted newer European mathematical approaches.

Babbage graduated from Cambridge in 1814 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1816, when he was only 24. He went on to become the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, the same prestigious chair once held by Isaac Newton.

But Babbage was not interested in mathematics merely as an abstract discipline. He wanted to mechanise it.

The problem that particularly obsessed him was the enormous number of errors found in mathematical tables. Astronomers, engineers, navigators and others depended on these tables, which had to be calculated and copied by hand.

While checking astronomical tables with astronomer John Herschel, Babbage became so frustrated by discrepancies that, according to his later recollection, he exclaimed: “I wish to God these calculations had been executed by steam.”

That frustration helped set him on the path toward automatic computation.

From the Difference Engine to the Analytical Engine


Babbage's first major calculating-machine project was the Difference Engine. He began working seriously on the design in the early 1820s and received government support to construct a larger version. The machine was intended to automate the production of mathematical tables and, crucially, reduce errors created by human calculation and transcription.

A working section of Difference Engine No. 1 was demonstrated in 1832, but the complete machine was never finished. Costs, engineering difficulties and increasingly serious disagreements surrounding its construction contributed to the project's collapse. The British government eventually abandoned the effort in 1842 after spending about £17,000 on it.

But Babbage had already moved on to something much more ambitious.

His Analytical Engine was conceived as a general-purpose programmable machine. It would have had a mechanism for processing calculations, a “store” for holding numbers and intermediate results, and punched cards to control operations. Modern historians therefore see it as an extraordinary precursor to the architecture of programmable computers.

Babbage died in London on October 18, 1871, without seeing the computer age he had helped anticipate. His Analytical Engine remained unfinished, but its concepts, stored information, programmed instructions and automated operations, would become fundamental to computing.

What Babbage meant by his quote


The humour in the potato-and-pineapple example hides a serious argument about innovation. Babbage was criticising a mindset that evaluates an invention only by what it fails to do. A machine designed to peel potatoes may be perfectly successful at its intended task. Declaring it useless because it cannot also slice pineapples changes the standard of success after the invention has already met its original purpose.

The idea has a remarkably modern application.

New technologies are often judged against everything they cannot yet accomplish rather than against the problem they were designed to solve. A prototype becomes “useless” because it is imperfect; a new scientific theory is dismissed because it does not answer every question; an unfamiliar technology is rejected because its first application is narrower than its eventual potential.

For Babbage, the better question was not simply “What is wrong with this?” but “What can this make possible?”
