Albert Einstein’s early life and education

Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Württemberg, now part of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He died on April 18, 1955, in Princeton, New Jersey, United States, at the age of 76. He was a German-born physicist who developed the special and general theories of relativity. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 for his explanation of the photoelectric effect. He is generally considered one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century.

Einstein’s parents were secular, middle-class Jews. His father, Hermann Einstein, first worked as a featherbed salesman and later operated an electrochemical factory. His mother, Pauline Koch, managed the household. Einstein had one sister, Maria, who was known as Maja. She was born two years after him. His childhood included experiences that influenced his interest in science.

At the age of five, Einstein encountered a compass. He was interested in the fact that an invisible force could move the needle. He later remembered this experience as one of the early events that influenced his interest in invisible forces. At the age of 12, he discovered a geometry book. He studied it closely and later referred to it as his “sacred little geometry book.”


His education and questions about science

Einstein became deeply religious at the age of 12. He wrote songs in praise of God and sang religious songs while going to school. His views later changed after he read science books that challenged some of his religious beliefs. This experience influenced his attitude toward established ideas.

At the Luitpold Gymnasium, he felt restricted by the Prussian-style education system. He believed the system did not allow enough room for originality and creativity. One teacher told him that he would never amount to anything.

Another influence came from Max Talmud, later known as Max Talmey. Talmud was a young medical student who regularly had dinner with the Einstein family. He became an informal tutor and introduced Einstein to higher mathematics and philosophy. When Einstein was 16, Talmud introduced him to Aaron Bernstein’s Popular Books on Physical Science. The books included a discussion of travelling alongside electricity inside a telegraph wire.

Einstein then asked a question that stayed with him for years: what would a light beam look like if a person could travel alongside it? This question became part of his thinking about light and relativity. He also wrote what he considered his first scientific paper, about the state of the aether in magnetic fields.


Einstein’s education was interrupted

Einstein’s education was affected by his father’s business problems. In 1894, Hermann Einstein’s company failed to secure an important contract to electrify Munich. He moved to Milan to work with a relative. Einstein stayed in Munich and was expected to complete his education. He left the school six months later. He faced concerns about military service and had no professional qualification at that point.

He later applied to the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich without an equivalent high school diploma. He had to pass entrance examinations. His results showed strength in mathematics and physics. He did not pass French, chemistry and biology. Because of his mathematics results, he was allowed to enter the polytechnic after completing his formal schooling.

He attended a school run by Jost Winteler in Aarau, Switzerland. He graduated in 1896. Einstein also renounced his German citizenship at that time. He remained stateless until 1901, when he became a Swiss citizen.


His years in Zurich

Einstein later recalled his years in Zurich as some of the happiest years of his life. He developed friendships with students including mathematician Marcel Grossmann and Michele Besso. He had long conversations with Besso about space and time. He also met Mileva Marić, a physics student from Serbia who later became his wife.

Einstein stayed with the Winteler family while studying. He became close to the family. Marie Winteler was his first love. His sister Maja later married Paul Winteler, and Michele Besso married Anna Winteler.

These parts of Einstein’s life show how education was not limited to classrooms. Books, teachers, family circumstances, friendships, questions and personal experiences all played roles in his development.
