The film is based on the 1985 novel Queer by William S. Burroughs. The story is set in 1950s Mexico City. The main character, William Lee, is an American ex-pat in his late 40s. He lives in a small American community and leads a quiet life. His routine changes when he meets Eugene Allerton, a young student.
