Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un were caught on a hot mic talking about how long people can live. This happened in Beijing during the ceremony marking 80 years since Japan’s defeat in World War II.

The conversation was picked up on a live feed while the three leaders were walking up the Tiananmen Gate before the parade. Social media users noticed and shared it. The audio was less than a minute long, sometimes cutting in and out, but it still revealed parts of what they said, as reported by Bloomberg.

Biotechnology and immortality talk

Xi started the chat in Mandarin, saying words like “these days” and “70 years old.” Xi said in Russian (a translator translated it), “Earlier, people rarely lived to 70, but these days at 70 years you are still a child.” Putin then replied and made some hand gestures, but the audio was not clear.

A translator then relayed Putin’s meaning in Mandarin, saying: “With the development of biotechnology, human organs can be continuously transplanted, and people can live younger and younger, and even achieve immortality.” Another translator also repeated something in Korean about organ transplants, which suggested Kim Jong Un was part of the talk too, as per the report by Bloomberg.

Xi prediction on living to 150

Xi then spoke again in Mandarin and made the final comment before the camera cut away: “Predictions are, this century, there’s a chance of also living to 150.” This chat happened only minutes before Xi gave an official speech about China’s victory over Japan, followed by a big military parade showing new weapons.

The three leaders stood together, with Xi in the middle, Putin on his right, Kim on his left, and translators walking behind them. Their ages and health are often talked about. Xi is 72 and removed term limits so he could stay in power past 2027. Putin, also 72, changed Russian laws so he can keep ruling too. Kim is 41 and brought his daughter to Beijing, making people think she might be his successor one day, as mentioned in the report by Bloomberg.

This hot mic moment stood out because events in China are very tightly controlled and unscripted conversations like this are almost never shown. Xi has been caught on hot mics before. In 2022, at a group of 20 summit Indonesia, he was seen accusing former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of leaking private meeting details. Also in the 2022 Party Congress meeting former leader Hu Jintao was suddenly escorted out, which made headlines.
