Purple Hulk: Who is he? Everything you need to know about this version of Happy Hogan

Episode 3, Season 2 of What If… ? witnessed Happy Hogan taking on a whole new form for MCU. Though it is not something new for the fans of Marvel Comics, for several decades this has not happened for Happy Hogan. Numerous new versions of characters appearing in Captain Carter to Star-Lord T’Challa have been introduced by What If…? except for Happy Hogan. He is known by a single identity – The Freak, that has not appeared for quite some time now.

Who Is Purple Hulk?

The Freak made its debut apparently as Purple Hulk in What If... Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?, What If..,.? Episode 3, Season 2. It has been a part of Marvel Comics since 1966.

Happy Hogan’s character was shown as ailing in the comics. Tony Stark healed his injuries by creating an experimental procedure. Though it helped to bring him back to life, it led to him being an angry monster with an immense amount of strength and powers of imperishability.


By accident, Happy gets injected with the blood of Hulk in What If ?...... Two goons and Justin Hammer tried to steal the same. Post getting injected with Hulk’s blood, he transforms himself slowly taking the shape of Purple Hulk. With the assistance of Maria Hill and Darcy Lewis, he then fights back Hammer, who gets dressed in the armor of Hulkbuster. The scene resembles the plot of Die Hard, 1988.

After that the Avengers come to his aid, thinking at first Happy to be the villain before the realization dawns on them that the whole plan was being operated by Hammer and he was their real enemy.

It was not only Happy to take the name – The Freak, as it was taken on by Eddie March also, whose version was hairless with gray skin, most recently appearing in the year 1973. This was the last time that anyone had made an appearance as The Freak in MCU, with What If ..? breaking a 50-year-old record in Episode 3, Season 2.

Will there be an adaptation of The Freak as Live Action?

Some of the characters of What If….? have received or will receive the live-action treatment or appear as other animated characters.

Most recently, Captain Carter made an appearance in live-action. It was played by Hayley Atwell in Doctor Strange, the Multiverse of Madness. Moreover, Marvel Zombies will be hitting Disney+ gradually and will feature a story that is inspired by the comics with the same name. It will also show What If …? first season’s fifth episode.

With the instances of Iron Man getting back in MCU films like Armor Wars, and Ironheart, Happy Hogan fans may also see more of him.
