For some people, an energy drink is an occasional rescue after a sleepless night. For others, cracking open a can has become as automatic as brushing their teeth. It happens before the morning commute, during the afternoon slump or immediately before opening the laptop. Psychology suggests that daily energy-drink consumption can become intertwined with habit formation, reinforcement, caffeine expectancy, fatigue management and withdrawal avoidance. In a systematic review of energy-drink studies, the most commonly reported reasons for drinking them included increasing energy or relieving fatigue, staying awake after insufficient sleep and improving concentration for academic work. That means the interesting question may not simply be Why do people like energy drinks? It may be: What psychological job has that daily can gradually learned to perform?

Psychology Says the Brain Can Learn to Associate the Can With “Time to Perform”

Repeated behaviors can become strongly connected with environmental cues. Imagine someone who buys the same energy drink every morning before beginning work. Initially, the decision may be deliberate: I'm exhausted today, so I need caffeine.

After months of repetition, however, the sequence itself becomes familiar: arrive at work, open laptop, crack can, start working. This is consistent with psychological research on habitual behavior, in which repeated actions in stable contexts become increasingly triggered by contextual cues. The drink can therefore become part of a performance ritual rather than a completely fresh decision every morning.


Eventually, the sight, taste or sound of opening the can may signal something psychologically meaningful: now it is time to concentrate.


Caffeine Expectancy Can Add Another Psychological Layer

What people expect caffeine to do also matters. Research on caffeine expectancy shows that consumers hold beliefs about caffeine's effects, including expectations involving energy and work enhancement, mood, physical performance, withdrawal and sleep. One large investigation developing the Caffeine Expectancy Questionnaire found that frequency and quantity of caffeine use were associated with stronger expectations of energy/work enhancement and withdrawal or dependence.

This does not mean the caffeine effect is imaginary. Caffeine has genuine pharmacological effects. Rather, psychology and pharmacology can operate together.

If someone repeatedly drinks an energy drink before difficult work and subsequently feels more alert, they may gradually form the belief: I work better after having this. The beverage can then become psychologically linked with readiness, productivity and competence.

Negative Reinforcement May Explain Why Daily Caffeine Feels Necessary

There is an even more interesting mechanism behind habitual caffeine use: negative reinforcement. In psychology, negative reinforcement occurs when a behavior becomes more likely because it removes or prevents an unpleasant experience.

Regular caffeine consumption can produce physical dependence in some users. When caffeine is withdrawn, symptoms can include headache, fatigue, drowsiness and difficulty concentrating. Research led by Roland Griffiths has shown that withdrawal avoidance can contribute to caffeine's reinforcing effects. This creates a potentially confusing cycle.

A regular user wakes up feeling sluggish. They drink caffeine and feel better. Naturally, they conclude: This energy drink gives me the energy I need. But part of the improvement in a dependent consumer may sometimes involve reversing caffeine withdrawal rather than providing an entirely new level of energy.

In other words, the drink can eventually become associated not only with feeling energized, but with feeling normal again.

The Daily Energy Drink Can Become Part of a Fatigue Loop

There is another possible cycle involving sleep. Caffeine reduces drowsiness partly by blocking adenosine receptors. Adenosine normally contributes to accumulating sleep pressure, so interfering with its signaling can temporarily make someone feel more alert. But timing and dose matter.

A systematic review found that evidence concerning regular caffeine consumption and subjective sleep quality remains mixed, with substantial differences between individuals and studies. Controlled research nevertheless shows that caffeine, particularly when consumed closer to bedtime, can delay sleep and affect sleep quality and efficiency.

Energy-drink research provides another clue. A 2024 study of college and university students found progressively poorer sleep outcomes with greater energy-drink consumption. Daily consumption showed the strongest association with short sleep duration. Because the study was observational, it cannot establish which causes which: tired people may consume more energy drinks, energy drinks may interfere with sleep, or both processes may operate simultaneously.

That possibility creates a cycle: Poor sleep produces fatigue. Fatigue increases the appeal of caffeine. Later caffeine may interfere with sleep. The next day's fatigue makes another energy drink attractive.

What feels like an energy habit can therefore sometimes be a fatigue-management habit.

Stress and High Demands May Be Hiding Behind the Can

It would also be a mistake to examine the drink without examining the person's life. Someone working night shifts, studying for examinations, juggling multiple jobs or regularly sleeping five hours has a very different reason for seeking stimulation than someone casually enjoying the taste.

Research examining energy drinks and mental health has reported associations with stress, anxiety and depression, although researchers have repeatedly cautioned against assuming straightforward causation. The direction can run both ways.

People experiencing heavy demands may be more likely to use energy drinks to cope with exhaustion. At the same time, high caffeine intake can produce effects such as nervousness, restlessness and sleep disturbance in susceptible people.

So the daily can may sometimes be less revealing than the question: Why does this person feel they need extra energy every single day?

Psychology Says Daily Use Does Not Automatically Mean Addiction

Daily energy-drink consumption should not automatically be labelled addiction. People vary substantially in caffeine sensitivity, metabolism, dose and patterns of consumption. A systematic review of caffeine genetics also notes the difficulty of precisely defining and measuring caffeine dependence across populations. But frequency is still worth paying attention to.

A meta-analysis covering 32 studies and 96,549 people found energy-drink consumption associated with increased odds of insomnia and jitteriness or activeness, with more frequent consumption associated with greater adverse-event risk.

The psychological distinction may therefore be between choosing the drink and gradually feeling unable to function normally without it.

For some daily users, the energy drink is simply enjoyable. For others, however, the familiar can may have become a powerful cue representing productivity, alertness, relief from fatigue and avoidance of withdrawal.

At that point, they may no longer be drinking only because they want more energy. They may be drinking because their brain has learned what it expects to happen without it.
