Psychology says people who keep searching for the AC and TV remote may be making this tiny memory mistake

You were holding the TV remote five minutes ago. Now it has vanished. You check the sofa, lift the cushions, search the coffee table and ask everyone in the house who moved it, only to discover it beside you or in another perfectly ordinary place. The same thing happens with the AC remote tomorrow. If this is a recurring part of your day, it is tempting to conclude that you simply have a terrible memory. Cognitive psychology, however, offers a more interesting explanation. Frequently misplacing everyday objects can involve absent-mindedness, weak memory encoding, divided attention, object-location binding and automatic action. In other words, sometimes you cannot remember where you left the remote because your brain never properly recorded the moment you put it down in the first place.

Psychology Says the Problem May Begin Before You Start Searching

Harvard psychologist Daniel Schacter famously classified common memory failures into the Seven Sins of Memory. One of them, absent-mindedness, is especially relevant to disappearing remotes.



Schacter describes absent-mindedness as a breakdown at the interface between attention and memory. His example is remarkably familiar: you put down your keys without paying attention to where you placed them, and consequently cannot remember their location later.

Replace “keys” with “remote” and the mechanism is essentially the same. Suppose you are watching television while scrolling through your phone. You pick up the remote, change the channel, answer a message and absent-mindedly place the remote beside a cushion.

Your hand performed the action. Your attention was somewhere else.

Weak Encoding Explains the ‘I Just Had It’ Mystery

This illustrates an important distinction between forgetting information and failing to encode it properly.

Memory formation depends heavily on attention. If little attention is directed toward an event when it happens, the resulting memory can be weak or incomplete. Schacter notes that divided attention during encoding can produce exactly these kinds of everyday memory failures.

This explains why people sometimes become frustrated while searching. “I literally had it two minutes ago!” That statement can be completely true. But physical proximity in time does not guarantee strong memory.

If putting the remote down was an insignificant background action while your attention was focused on the television, conversation, food or phone, your brain had little reason to create a detailed memory of it.

Your Brain Has to Remember the Object and Its Location Together

Another relevant concept is object-location binding. Knowing what an object is and remembering where it is are not exactly the same cognitive problem. Research published in PLOS ONE examined how people remember objects and their positions. Researchers found that memory errors could arise from failures to correctly bind an object's identity with its location.

Imagine having three familiar objects around the sofa: your phone, glasses and remote. You know all three objects perfectly well. You also remember several places where you recently interacted with them. But which object was left in which location? That association is what the brain must successfully preserve.

A neurocognitive review by Albert Postma, Roy Kessels and Marieke van Asselen similarly describes object-location memory as involving multiple processes, including object processing, spatial-location processing and binding the object to its location.

So repeatedly losing the remote does not necessarily mean someone has poor memory generally. The specific where-did-I-put-it memory can fail.

Automatic Actions Can Make the Remote Disappear

There is another reason remotes are especially easy to lose: putting them down is incredibly routine. Psychologist Donald Norman's research on action slips examined mistakes that occur during familiar, highly learned behaviors. More recent cognitive research describes action slips as failures that can emerge within habitual action sequences when attention is insufficiently controlling what we are doing.

Picking up and putting down a remote rarely demands conscious thought. Compare it with placing an expensive passport somewhere before an international trip. You might deliberately think, I'm putting my passport in the top drawer.

But nobody normally thinks, I am now placing the AC remote on the right-hand side of the sofa. The action is too ordinary to deserve that level of attention. Ironically, its ordinariness is precisely what makes the location easier to forget.

Why Do People Keep Looking in Places They Already Checked?

Then comes the comedy of searching. You check underneath one cushion. Nothing. Thirty seconds later, you lift the same cushion again.

Research on visual search shows that our search behavior does contain memory for previously inspected locations, but people nevertheless revisit locations during searches. Eye-tracking experiments by Matthew Peterson and colleagues found that participants sometimes refixated previously examined items.

Real homes make searching even more complicated. A remote can blend into blankets, slide underneath furniture or sit somewhere that seems so obvious that attention skips over it.

Interestingly, research has found that actively searching for objects can produce strong incidental memory for their locations. In one experiment, participants later remembered searched-for objects particularly well, even though they had not explicitly been instructed to memorize them.

Perhaps that explains why, once you finally discover the remote under a particular cushion, you may remember that location quite clearly, at least until tomorrow's absent-minded placement starts the process again.

Constantly Losing the Remote Does Not Mean You Have a ‘Bad Brain’

Frequently searching for a TV or AC remote should not be turned into a personality diagnosis. It does not automatically mean someone is careless, unintelligent, disorganized or developing a memory disorder.

The crucial question is whether the problem is limited to ordinary objects handled automatically or is part of a broader, meaningful change in everyday memory and functioning.

For many people, the remote problem is far more mundane. Their brain is excellent at remembering information that receives attention. The location of a plastic rectangle placed on the sofa while watching television simply did not make the priority list.

That is why the funniest part of losing the remote may also be the most psychologically accurate. You are searching your memory for information that, moments earlier, you barely noticed yourself creating.
