The convenience is undeniable. But psychology suggests that when people routinely outsource even simple cognitive tasks, something interesting can happen: they may get fewer opportunities to practise independent thinking.
That does not mean everyone who frequently uses AI has “stopped thinking.” The more accurate concept is cognitive offloading, using an external tool to reduce the mental effort required to complete a task.

Psychologists Evan Risko and Sam Gilbert describe cognitive offloading as using the environment to reduce cognitive demands. Writing a reminder on your phone instead of memorising an appointment is a simple example. They may know they could probably retrieve it after thinking for 20 seconds. But if AI can provide the answer instantly, the mental search may feel unnecessary. Each individual action is insignificant.
But repeated thousands of times, the person may become increasingly accustomed to retrieving rather than reasoning, receiving rather than generating and verifying rather than initially exploring.
Critical Thinking Can Change the Way People Use AI
Research increasingly suggests that the important question is not simply whether someone uses AI, but how they use it. A 2026 study published in Computers & Education found that interventions designed to encourage critical thinking reduced students' direct adoption of AI-generated content and produced more creative and original solutions.Another 2026 experimental study found that open AI support increased participants' confidence and was associated with substantial acceptance of incorrect AI recommendations, while a brief reflection prompt reduced acceptance of incorrect advice. That finding highlights the importance of metacognitive reflection.
Instead of immediately asking, “What is the answer?”, a person can first ask, “What do I think the answer is?” That tiny pause preserves an opportunity for independent reasoning.

Retrieval, for example, can be more beneficial for memory than simply being shown the answer. This provides a useful way of thinking about AI.If someone asks AI every question before attempting to remember, calculate, compare or reason, they may be removing some of the very mental effort through which those abilities are practised.
