European champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) started off their new season on a winning note by clinching more silverware on Wednesday as they edged Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup after staging a late comeback to level the match 2-2 in Udine, Italy.

Tottenham looked set to claim the UEFA Super Cup in their first competitive match under new coach Thomas Frank, leading 2-0 shortly after half-time at the Stadio Friuli in Udine.

Micky van de Ven opened the scoring in the 39th minute, and Cristian Romero doubled the advantage three minutes into the second half, giving Spurs a comfortable lead over last season’s Europa League winners.

However, PSG staged a dramatic comeback late in the game, thanks to two substitutes. Lee Kang-in pulled a goal back in the 85th minute, before Goncalo Ramos headed in the equaliser in the fourth minute of injury time, forcing a penalty shoot-out.

The shoot-out began poorly for PSG as Vitinha missed their first attempt, but goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier made a key save from Van de Ven. After Mathys Tel also missed for PSG, Nuno Mendes stepped up to score the decisive penalty, giving PSG victory.

Spurs scorers Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro were ultimately in vain, while Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, and Lee converted for PSG.

This marked the first time PSG - or any French club - has lifted the UEFA Super Cup, bringing their 2025 trophy tally to five. PSG captain Marquinhos praised the team’s mental resilience and tactical discipline, highlighting their ability to capitalise on Spurs’ defensive approach after going 2-0 up.

Frank, while disappointed, expressed pride in his team’s performance, noting the positives from their debut match despite the late collapse.

New signings Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha started for Spurs, while Chevalier debuted for PSG, stepping up with crucial saves despite conceding two early goals.

PSG will open their Ligue 1 campaign against Nantes, while Spurs begin the Premier League season hosting Burnley.
