Prince Harry's 40th birthday surprise: Thanks to Queen Mother's unique plan, inheritance outshines William's share

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, will turn 40 on September 15. He will receive a sizable legacy from his late great-grandmother, the Queen Mother. Twice the Queen Mother's estimated $120 million fortune was placed in a trust fund for her great-grandchildren, after she passed away in 2002 at the age of 101. As per the reports of Fox Digital News, author Christopher Andersen said that Prince William's future as Prince of Wales—a title that carries significant resources from the Duchy of Cornwall, estimated to be worth over $1 billion—was something the Queen Mother had expected. As a result, she gave Harry a little bit more, and his part has increased over time. Harry was expected to get $8.5 million, which was more than William's part, according to the UK's Mirror.

Reason behind the distribution

Given that Harry had fewer possibilities and obligations than William, Kinsey Schofield, host of the "To Di For Daily" podcast, stated that Harry's larger inheritance was a deliberate choice. There are no issues because the family has known about this arrangement for many years. Andersen observed that the Queen Mother, who lived to be nearly 102 years old, decided that the trust should be distributed at age 40, which is when financial prudence was acceptable. She probably meant this to be a financial safety net, even if she could not have predicted Harry's subsequent problems.

The Queen Mother spared her grandchildren from paying hefty inheritance taxes, which increased their wealth, according to information published in the U.K. Times in 2020 on Harry's inheritance. Harry will still have to pay taxes on any future income, though. William still gains a great deal from his position as Duke of Cornwall, even if Harry receives a larger birthday payout than he does. William got more than $30 million from the Duchy of Cornwall estate for the 2023–2024 fiscal year, which helps to pay for his living expenses as a working royal.

Harry's relationship with William deteriorated even more when he and his spouse, Meghan Markle, relocated to the United States in 2020, citing mistreatment by the media and a lack of palace support.
