President Biden, along with First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Harris, and first gentleman Doug Emhoff, will attend a tribute service on Tuesday to commemorate the life of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who passed away at the age of 96 earlier this month. This solemn gathering at a church in Emory University serves as a tribute to a nearly half-century-long friendship shared between President Biden and Mrs. Carter.

While grappling with critical international issues, particularly Israel's conflict in Gaza and the pursuit of hostage release by Hamas, President Biden continues to pay homage to friends and colleagues through these commemorative events. Reflecting on his own experiences of loss that shaped his life, Biden frequently participates in memorial services to honor the memory of those he deeply respected.

The upcoming tribute precedes a funeral scheduled for Wednesday in Plains, Ga., the longtime residence of Rosalynn and her husband, former President Jimmy Carter. The couple had resided there since the 1960s, and Rosalynn will be laid to rest at their home.

Though President Biden is not slated to deliver remarks during Tuesday's memorial, his close ties with the Carters are well-documented. Dating back to 1976, when Biden became the first senator to endorse Jimmy Carter's presidential bid, their connection has remained steadfast. Biden's endorsement of Carter, a relatively unknown candidate at the time, marked the start of a supportive alliance.

Despite occasional disagreements, notably on issues like court-ordered school busing, Biden maintained his support for Carter, even endorsing him for re-election in 1980, a year that saw Carter's loss to Ronald Reagan.

The reciprocal support between the Bidens and Carters persisted over the years. Jimmy Carter voiced his endorsement for Biden's 2020 presidential candidacy, emphasizing Biden's pivotal role as an early and influential supporter in the Senate. Additionally, Rosalynn Carter lauded Biden's efforts in collaborating to advocate for unpaid caregivers in a video message presented at the Democratic National Convention.

The Bidens' friendship with the Carters remained unwavering. Despite being unable to attend Biden's inauguration, Jimmy Carter spoke with him on the eve of the ceremony. Later, the Bidens visited the Carters in Plains, highlighting the enduring bond between the two families.

Throughout his presidency, President Biden stayed connected with the Carters, continuing their dialogue. In October, Biden informed Jimmy Carter of his decision to safeguard Alaskan lands and cancel oil drilling leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, an action Carter deemed significant among his presidential achievements.

Following Rosalynn Carter's passing on November 19, the Bidens paid tribute to her as an inspirational figure who carved her unique path. In a statement, they acknowledged her advocacy for women, mental health care, and her enduring spirit that radiated hope, warmth, and optimism throughout their longstanding friendship.

As President Biden joins in the tribute to Rosalynn Carter, it's a poignant reminder of the enduring bonds beyond political arenas and the profound impact of cherished relationships in the midst of intense diplomatic responsibilities.
