President Joe Biden eulogised Walter Mondale as one of America's 'great giants'

President Joe Biden paid tribute to former Vice President Walter F. Mondale on the occasion of a deeply personal memorial service in Minneapolis on Sunday. The US President hailed Walter F. Mondale as 'one of America's 'great giants'. The memorial service was held on Sunday at the University of Minnesota.

Walter Mondale remained the vice president when Jimmy Carter was the Democratic President. He died in his sleep at the age of 93 in April 2021. Walter Mondale memorial service had been postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic situation.

Mr President flew to attend this memorial service of Mr Mondale, his friend of five decades and a colleague during their days as senators. Biden also added that Walter Mondale inspired him and many other Americans to keep faith in the country's public service even in dark times.


In his speech, the US President recollected the days of their decades-long friendship and requested the nation to follow the last vice president's example. He added that the American people admired Mondale as he spread his goodness to them.

The President was also seen sharing a particularly poignant moment when he lost his then-wife Neilia Hunter Biden, along with his daughter Naomi. He recalled how Mondale and his wife were there for him.

Walter Mondale acted as the vice president under Jimmy Carter between 1977 and 1981. Unfortunately, his term as vice present ended when Ronald Reagan and his vice-presidential candidate George H. W. Bush triumphed over Carter and Mondale in 1980.

Later, Mondale won the nomination for the Democratic presidential candidate in 1984 and made history by choosing US Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro of New York as his running mate for the vice president seat. Geraldine A. Ferraro was the first woman candidate who fought for the presidential seat of a major US political party. Ultimately, Mondale lost the election to Reagan.
