Watch: US and Taliban engage in prisoner swap
The US has secured the release of contractor and US Navy veteran Mark Frerichs, who was kidnapped in Afghanistan more than two years ago. President Biden spoke to Frerichs' sister by phone and said Frerichs' health had stabilized and he would return home soon.

In exchange for Frerichs' release, the Biden administration signed a deal with the Taliban to allow Haji Bashir Nurzai to return home. The nurse spent 17 years in prison in the United States for drug trafficking in New York. At a press conference in Kabul, Nurzai said he was a member of the prisoner exchange and was later identified as the unnamed American Frerich.

In a statement confirming Frerichs' release, Biden tacitly acknowledged that the deal involved a pardon for Taliban member Noorzai, who was sentenced to life in prison for importing heroin. After the Taliban took control of Afghanistan last year, several factors hampered Biden's efforts to liberate Frerichs. In January 2020, the Taliban kidnapped Frerichs, a civilian contractor from Illinois.

As a government, the Biden administration does not recognize the Taliban. Senior US officials told the group they would not be able to maintain good relations until Frerichs was released on Monday. Frerichs sister, who lives in Lombard, Illinois, thanked US officials for securing her brother's release.

Some expressed displeasure with the exchange, including some drug law enforcement officials investigating Nurzai and other Taliban-linked heroin traffickers. The nurse told reporters at a news conference in Afghanistan that he had handed over an American detained to the Taliban in Kabul after he was released from an unnamed US prison the day before. According to Frerichs' family, it was him.

Officials from both US presidential administrations didn't bring him home until Monday. The Taliban demanded Nurzai's release from the United States in place of Frerichs before they seized control of Afghanistan last August. Washington has yet to make a deal or trade for it.

In August 2021, the Taliban overthrew the Western-backed Afghan government, raising concerns that progress in the negotiations could be reversed. Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mutaki also spoke to Nurzai at a press conference in Kabul.
