US President Joe Biden announces $36 Billion in relief for the Central States Pension Fund.

One of America's most significant and troubled pension funds swill receive $36 Billion, bringing relief to more than 350,000 retirees. Over 20 months ago, US President Joe Biden assured the nation of a $86 Billion pay-out to the multi-employer Central States Pension Fund, which would be achieved through a provision within the American Rescue Plan.

Reaction to these developments seems relatively positive, with critics declaring that the decision will provide economic security for union workers upon retirement.

This isn't to say that there was no pushback against the bailout. Senator Chuck Grassley, for example, pointed out that a mere cheque isn't enough to correct wrongs. He believes holding the mismanaged plans accountable should be a priority in these dealings. Furthermore, analysts have pointed out that the solution is temporary and will likely require a second bailout.

The Central States Pension Fund is only one of 1400 multi-employer pension funds covering over 9 million people in the US, with approximately 100 plans steadily declining. To avoid the absolution of over 200 funds, Biden has signed a law to provide money through the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. The administration's ultimate goal is to prevent 2-3 million workers from suffering the consequences of benefit losses.
