‘Portal’: NVIDIA to come up with free graphics upgrade for game

When the first-person shooter/puzzler game Portal was released in 2007, it got praise from gamers and critics alike for its inventive gameplay, unique approach to storytelling, and GLaDOS’s deadpan wit. Though its gameplay certainly holds up even 15 years after its release, the game's visuals are not good enough. So, the good news is that the game will have a graphical overhaul. And you can update the game for free if you bought Portal in the past.

In this reimagining of the original graphics of Portal, the NVIDIA RTX Remix tool is used. It uses a graphics technique that’s computationally intensive in which the game sends light rays into the 3D environment. Then measurements are done regarding how those rays deflect towards light sources. This results in a dynamically-lit, detailed environment that performs excellently on modern hardware.




In the RTX version of the game, the flat surfaces will be replaced by more ceilings, walls and floors with better realistic textures that include more bumps and grooves. The result of these would be added depth and realism in the graphics.

NVIDIA included ray tracing in the upgrade, and the models and textures were rebuilt from scratch. So, everything has an entirely modern look, including the companion cube, the portals, and your portal gun look. The upgraded game might seem to be dropped alongside Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok this year. The update is free for anyone, who has purchased Portal on PC.
