Porsches across Russia mysteriously shut down — is this a James Bond–style cyber hit?

Nobody knows the exact cause yet, but Russia’s biggest dealership group suspects it might be sabotage. A Rolf spokesperson said, “It’s possible this was done deliberately,” but they did not give any proof, as per the report by Independent. Porsche stopped all official support in Russia after Germany halted commercial operations in 2022 because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Because Porsche left the country, Russian owners have no official help or service from the company.
Porsche Russia car shutdown
No other countries except Russia are facing this mysterious shutdown issue. Some Russian dealerships have found a temporary fix by manually resetting the alarm units inside the cars. Rolf dealerships started getting a big rise in service complaints on 28 November. Rolf service director Yulia Trushkova said, “Currently, there is no connection for all models and types of internal combustion engines,” explaining the scale of the problem, as noted in the report by Independent.
Porsche VTS system problem
She also said, “Any vehicle can be blocked. Currently, the blocking can be bypassed by resetting the factory alarm unit and disassembling it. We are continuing to investigate the issue and the mechanics’ options for unlocking the vehicles.”
The problem affects all Porsche models made after 2013 that use an anti-theft Vehicle Tracking System (VTS). When the VTS loses satellite signal, it thinks the car is being stolen and immediately shuts down the engine. Porsche’s website explains that “The Porsche Vehicle Tracking System is designed to seamlessly operate in a covert fashion, eliminating the need for daily activation and deactivation,” showing how the system normally works, as cited by Independent.
