While affirming his commitment to ongoing improvement and expressing no immediate intention to step down, Pope Francis, in a recent interview with Mexican journalist Valentina Alazraki, shared his preliminary plans for his funeral and burial.

The Pope mentioned his desire to be laid to rest in the renowned Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. Despite canceling a trip to a UN climate summit due to health concerns, he assured that his health is improving, albeit advising a slight concern from others.

Francis acknowledged the need to reduce his pace, revealing that his global travels have required reconsideration due to mobility issues that occasionally confine him to a wheelchair. He openly recognized these limitations.

Despite turning 87 on December 17, the pontiff emphasized that "old age matures you a lot, it's pleasant," expressing an overall sense of well-being despite facing health challenges and hospital stays throughout the year. He acknowledged being labeled imprudent for his desire to stay active but considered it a positive sign.

When inquired about reconsidering resignation due to health challenges this year, the pope replied that it hadn't occurred to him. He also expressed admiration for his predecessor Benedict XVI's courage in stepping down, stating, "I ask the Lord to say enough, at some point, but when he wants.”

Pope Francis confirmed the enduring nature of the papacy while emphasizing the importance of readiness for its conclusion. In this regard, he disclosed that he had discussions with the Papal Master of Ceremonies, Italian Archbishop Diego Ravelli, to arrange his own funeral and make adjustments to the papal funeral rite. He mentioned that they had simplified it considerably.

While Pope Francis's choice to be interred outside St. Peter's Basilica is noteworthy, it is not unprecedented. St. Mary Major houses the remains of five earlier popes: Pius V, Sixtus V, Clement XIII, Paul V, and Clement IX.

Interestingly, Pope Pius V, who proclaimed in Quo Primum that priests should celebrate according to the Roman Missal "now and forever," is hailed as a hero by Latin Mass enthusiasts. In contrast, Francis is recognized for imposing extensive restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass.
