According to authorities, UMass Boston is surrounded by police following 'unconfirmed reports' of an active shooter.

First, school officials claimed that a "police incident" had occurred close to the US Senate's Edward M. Kennedy Institute. After that, the alert was changed to a "safety threat" close to a residence hall in the East Building at UMass. Fifteen minutes later, there was another alert regarding a "police incident in/near Campus Center,” as per a report by The Hill.

How did the university let students know?


Students and staff received a text before 4 p.m reading, “Students in the dorms stay in your rooms, do not answer the doors for anyone unless it is the police.”

An earlier social media post reported a "public safety threat" near the Residence Hall East Building, as per a report by WCVB.


What is going on at school right now?


Police from Boston and UMass are still on the scene, telling people to stay away from Residence Hall East and the Campus Center. Several members of Boston EMS also responded to the incident, reported Boston 25 News.

The investigation is still going on, and officials haven't said yet if anyone was hurt in the shooting.

“Law enforcement will coordinate with our campus partners to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff,” Massachusetts State Police said.

However, according to Boston police, there was no proof of any gunfire or armed individuals on campus.


“Troopers have responded to UMass Boston to an unconfirmed report of a shooting on campus,” the Massachusetts State Police wrote in an X post.


An hour after the initial report at 3:43 p.m., police said the investigation was still ongoing and asked the public to stay away for the time being.


UMass confirmed Thursday night's cancellation of classes and events just before 5 p.m. ET, stating that a police investigation was "ongoing." Officers were seen entering and leaving buildings on campus in WCVB video.
