Each spring, an unusual practice unfolds quietly in backyard gardens around the country: somebody puts way too many straws on a couple of potato tubers and goes about his or her usual business. It looks lazy. It sounds impractical. Yet a Utah State University article says this 'low-effort' method is the better one: plant potatoes 1 to 2 inches deep and cover them with 4 to 6 inches of straw, grass clippings, or shredded newspaper.

Not only does it help maintain soil coolness and moisture, but it can also make harvest easier because there is less digging. If you've seen a parent or grandparent digging potatoes 6 inches deep and being done with it, this may seem like gardening heresy. However, there is real science behind the shallow-and-mulch method, and it is important to understand that prior to dismissing it as a social media gardening trend.

The little-talked-about soil-temperature problem


One big mistake new gardeners make is planting potatoes at the wrong time of year and then rebelling against the heat. A March 2026 University of Maryland article reports that soil temperatures above 80°F are actively inhibiting tuber development, and a heavy mulch (straw) after hilling will keep the soil cool and moist and will discourage Colorado potato beetles. That's a two-for-one most Texas, Georgia, or Southern California raised-bed gardeners want during the long days of summer. It matters more in the US, simply because most backyard vegetable gardening in raised beds or containers is done in areas where the sun warms the soil very quickly. Uncovered soil baking in the sun is a low-and-slow cooker for your potatoes. Mulching functions as your sunscreen.

Does mulch actually work?

Fair question. A 2025 field study titled “Straw strip mulching boosts potato yields by enhancing soil moisture and water use efficiency,” published in Frontiers in Plant Science, actually provides a useful answer. The straw strip mulching experiment by Chen et al. showed that the potato yields were improved by up to 25.1%, and the water-use efficiency was improved by up to 14.3%, compared to unmulched, bare-land planting, primarily because of the higher water-holding capacity of the soil in the growing season. It wasn't just a marginal gardening hack in that trial; it produced a measurably better harvest, and the advantage was most pronounced in the hot, dry growing conditions typical of places like the American Southwest and Midwest.

There were some nuances that you need to know before you go all in and start mulching: straw mulching yielded significantly better results than traditional ridge cultivation, with an average of 39.5% more yield, as per a 2023 review titled “Sustainable Potato Growth under Straw Mulching Practices,” published in the journal Sustainability. However, straw mulch did seem to result in a slight decrease in the tubers’ dry matter and specific gravity in comparison to bare-ridge cultivation. To make this plain: You will likely see slightly less density or starch for potatoes, but it will probably be a lot more potatoes. That's a sacrifice that most home gardeners are willing to make when they're preparing potatoes for their evening meal.

So, is the hype deserved?

Basically, yes, but. The "low effort" label refers mainly to harvest day, no more digging six inches down with a shovel and a prayer, not to a completely hands-off growing season. It's not some flashy new internet secret either; it's the same kind of boring, low-tech, slow-release gardening advice that simply doesn't make for a punchy 15-second video. It does take some patience: mulch breaks down over the season and needs topping up, you'll want a source of straw or clippings that's free of herbicide residue, and you have to accept that this is a maintained system, not a set-it-and-forget-it one. One thing not to compromise on: tubers still need to stay covered.

Potatoes exposed to light, whether from too little soil, mulch that's thinned out over the season, or storage in a bright spot, turn green and build up solanine, a natural toxin that can cause nausea, headaches, and other symptoms in high enough concentrations. Shallow planting only stays safe if the 4–6 inches of mulch (and any soil hilled up around the stems) is kept topped up all season, so no tuber pokes through into direct light. But the underlying rationale: cooler soil, moisture conservation, an easier harvest, and real yield gains confirmed in the field, remains valid. If you're looking for a productive garden without a season's worth of backbreaking digging, skip the six-inch trench, keep the mulch thick and topped up, and your back (and your potatoes) will thank you for it.
