Immediately after the release of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales', it was speculated that the sixth installment of the franchise would begin. Joachim Ronning, co-director of the fifth returned to helm the movie while Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were asked to write the script. Later in 2019, Disney enlisted Pirates veteran Ted Elliott and 'The Last of Us' co-creator Craig Mazin to work on a new story. Mazin confirmed in September 2023 that Disney had purchased their script, but the process came to a halt when the Writers Guild of America went on strike.
