After years of experimenting with mobile photo editing, Adobe has introduced Photoshop Mobile for iPhone—its most advanced attempt at delivering professional-grade editing on smartphones.

Built from the ground up for mobile use, the app synchronises effortlessly with Photoshop on desktop and web, offering unlimited layers and powerful editing tools.

Photoshop Mobile’s desktop features

Unlike earlier mobile versions such as Photoshop Express and Photoshop Fix, which had limited editing capabilities, Photoshop Mobile incorporates key desktop features, including layers, masking and advanced selection tools.

It also introduces a more intuitive, touch-friendly interface. The app will be available for Android users later this year, according to a report by FastCompany.

New editing experience for mobile

According to the report, Photoshop Mobile is designed around a "select and do" touch interface. Instead of navigating traditional drop-down menus, users tap directly on image elements, prompting a menu with relevant editing options. This contextual user interface streamlines workflows, making complex edits more accessible while also enabling beginners to work efficiently.

A key innovation is "tap select," an AI-powered feature that allows users to instantly select objects—such as people, buildings, or plants—with a single tap. Combined with pixel-level fine-tuning, this makes Photoshop Mobile both powerful and user-friendly.

While the application closely resembles the desktop version, some features, such as vector drawing tools, will not be available at launch. However, Adobe has assured users that future updates will introduce features like Shapes and more.

Photoshop Mobile: Subscription model

Photoshop Mobile is free to download, but most advanced features require an $8 per month subscription, which also includes access to Photoshop on the web. Adobe sees this as an opportunity to attract new users, particularly younger audiences accustomed to platforms like Canva and social media design tools, FastCompany reported.

Following the success of Lightroom Mobile—which now has more users on mobile than on desktop—Adobe hopes that Photoshop Mobile will achieve similar adoption. The company envisions an integrated workflow where users edit images first in Lightroom, refine them in Photoshop Mobile, and then add text or effects using Photoshop Express.
