Philadelphia radio legend Jerry Blavat passes away at 82

The radio legend Jerry Blavat the South Philadelphia native passed away at the age of 82 confirmed by a family spokesperson.

Radio legend Jerry Blavat born Gerald Joseph Blavat, the South Philadelphia native who started his career in entertainment as a dancer on a bandstand at 13, died at the age of 82.

Blavat started hosting his own radio show at the age of 20, which showcased his bright and vibrant personality that captivated the region. Blavat got many nicknames such as ‘The Boss with the Hot Sauce’ and ‘The Geator with the Heater.'

In 1993 Blavat was inducted into the Philadelphia Music Alliance's Hall of Fame and he became part of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame's Museum of Radio and Records in 1998.


He released his biography ‘You Only Rock Once: My life in music’ in 2011 and coined the phrase "Keep on rockin' because you only rock once'.

Blavat was actively involved in radio, running the Geator Gold Radio Network and "Memories" in Margate. Philadelphia Magazine in 2018, voted him the "Best Philly Icon"

He remained active in radio, running the Geator Gold Radio Network and "Memories" in Margate. And was immortalized on a South Philadelphia mural with other local music legends like ‘Wildwood Days singer Bobby Rydell.
