PFA chairman John Mousinho appointed as head coach at Portsmouth

The Professional Footballers’ Association chairman, John Mousinho appointed as head coach at Portsmouth.

Portsmouth has appointed John Mousinho, 36, the Professional Footballers’ Association chairman as head coach on “a long-term contract”. He left his position at League One rivals Oxford as player-coach to move to Fratton Park.

John Mousinho has replaced Danny Cowley, who was sacked on January 2 after nine league games without victory.

Mousinho told Portsmouth’s website that he is delighted to be appointed as Pompey's head coach and is excited to get started in the role. He further stated that he shares similar ambitions with the club and is focused on delivering short as well as long-term success. He expressed that he wants the team to play on the front foot to win games and entertain the fans with aggressive and attacking football.


Andrew Cullen, Pompey's chief executive said they are delighted to welcome John Mousinho as a new head coach and he possesses real leadership and motivational skills.

Richard Hughes, Pompey's sporting director Richard said he is delighted to have the opportunity to work with John who is a natural leader and whose personality has a spark.

Mousinho, who has held his role as chairman of the PFA’s players’ board since May 2021 will renounce. Portsmouth said he would soon come down from that position to fully focus on his new role as head coach.

Mousinho started his professional football career under former Pompey midfielder Martin Allen at Brentford after completing studies at the University of Notre Dame in America.
Before signing for Oxford in 2017, he appeared for Wycombe, Stevenage, Preston, and Burton. He made more than 150 appearances for United.
