It is known as the National Pearl Harbour Remembrance Day and honours those who lost their lives to the surprise Japanese Kamikaze attack on the US naval base in Hawaii.
353 Japanese fighter planes and bombers launched from six aircraft carriers launched the assault just before 8 AM local time on 7 December 1941. Around 2,403 Americans died in the attack, and about 1,178 more were injured.
Eight US Navy Battleships were damaged, out of which four were sunk. More than 180 US aircraft were also annihilated due to the attack. The Japanese lost 64 servicemen, along with 29 airplanes and five submarines. The attack was carried out to prevent the US from interfering in Japanese military plans in South East Asia.
