Paulinho scores extra-time winner as Palmeiras edge Botafogo to enter Club World Cup quarters
Paulinho's extra-time goal propelled Palmeiras to a 1-0 victory over Botafogo in the FIFA Club World Cup's last-16 clash, securing their spot as the first quarterfinalist. The hard-fought win came after a dominant performance, though they finished...

The decisive goal came in the 100th minute when Paulinho weaved into the box and fired a low shot that deflected off Botafogo defender Alexander Barboza before nestling in the bottom left corner.
The strike made Palmeiras the tournament’s first quarterfinalist and set up a meeting with Chelsea, who defeated Benfica later that night.
Palmeiras finished with 10 men after captain Gustavo Gomez was sent off in the 116th minute for a second yellow. Joaquín Piquerez will also miss the quarterfinal due to accumulation of bookings.
Botafogo, reigning Copa Libertadores champions, became the first Brazilian team eliminated after Flamengo and Fluminense had already advanced. Goalkeeper John kept them in contention with four saves, including stops on Mauricio and Estevao in the second half.
Palmeiras had the better chances throughout. Mauricio forced two difficult saves from John, while Estevao and Paulinho also came close. Paulinho missed a promising opportunity in the 88th minute but redeemed himself in extra time with a composed finish.
Botafogo's best chance came in the 115th minute when Artur volleyed Joaquin Correa’s cross just wide of the near post. But they struggled to match Palmeiras' intensity and attacking intent over the 120 minutes.
The all-Brazilian affair saw Palmeiras assert dominance and advance with momentum.
