Paul Finebaum considers leaving ESPN for U.S. Senate run in Alabama
Prominent ESPN and SEC Network commentator Paul Finebaum is considering departing the sports network to pursue a U.S. Senate position in Alabama.

“I ended up talking to someone … who made it clear that there was a desire for me to be involved,” Finebaum mentioned to OutKick. “And this person … was compelling and compassionate in the approach to me, and I started thinking about this.”

The notion to enter politics follows recent circumstances that made Finebaum reconsider his position in public life. He has been influenced by the political environment in Alabama and the recent murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Finebaum, who recently relocated from Charlotte, N.C., back to his longtime home in Birmingham, Ala., stated he would run as a Republican. He is anticipated to vie for the post vacated by former Auburn and Ole Miss coach Tommy Tuberville, who is operating for governor.

Trump Influence on Decision

Known for being private about his political views, Finebaum stated that he voted for Donald Trump in 2024. He mentioned that if Trump personally asked him to run, he would not be able to refuse.

“Impossible to tell him no. There’s no way I could. I would tell him yes,” Finebaum said.

The filing deadline for the Senate race is in January, and Finebaum hopes to make his last decision within the next “30 to 45 days.”

Media Career Highlights

Finebaum started his media profession in the 1980s as a newspaper reporter and columnist in Birmingham, gradually becoming the host of “The Paul Finebaum Show,” syndicated in the Southeast.

He joined ESPN in 2013 as the renowned face of the SEC Network. Finebaum signed a multiyear contract extension in 2024, though he has not yet formally stepped away from the network.

Finebaum primarily hesitated to pursue the Senate seat because former Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl had conveyed interest. Pearl later revealed he would not run for the likely empty position.
