Patti Smith has been treated in hospital for a sudden illness

Poet and legendary singer Patti Smith reportedly had to postpone a performance due to an unidentified medical condition that sent her to the hospital in Bologna, Italy.

The venue posted on Instagram, saying With deep regret, we inform the kind audience that the [Patti Smith] concert scheduled for today, December 12, 2023, at 9 pm, will not be able to go on stage due to a sudden illness.

Smith is due to perform in Venice on Thursday. The "Gloria" singer has been touring Italy, but it's uncertain if she'll be well enough to play at the venue by then.

Prior to the year's end, the singer of "Because the Night" had three US shows scheduled. She had two gigs in Brooklyn, New York, and a performance at Chicago's Salt Shed on December 27.

Smith's career began in 1973 when she collaborated with Jay Dee Daugherty, Lenny Kaye, Richard Sohl, and Ivan Kral on their debut song, "Hey Joe/Piss Factory."

After releasing their third album, "Wave," in 1979, the trio went on to record three more albums before breaking up.
