'Past Lives' inspired by immigrant experience, director says
Korean-Canadian director Celine Song's life as an immigrant inspired the Oscar-nominated film "Past Lives". The film centres on two old friends, Nora and Hae Sung, who reunite in New York decades after parting ways as children in South Korea. It h...

Song revealed that a conversation between her friend from South Korea and her husband in a New York bar, where she acted as a translator due to their language barrier, sparked the idea for the film. Being bilingual, she realized that she was translating aspects of her identity and history, prompting her to embark on creating "Past Lives."
The film revolves around Nora and Hae Sung, childhood friends who reunite in New York after decades of being separated in South Korea. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival last year, it has garnered critical acclaim and secured a Best Picture nomination at this year's Academy Awards, competing with films like "Oppenheimer" and "Anatomy Of A Fall," as well as a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Additionally, the film received the Best Feature award at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Song, who was born in South Korea and moved to Canada at the age of 12, similar to the main character Nora, made a deliberate decision to infuse autobiographical elements into her debut feature film.
"I think it should be something that you deeply believe only you can do or you must do in order to make or write something worthwhile to watch," said Song about her personal approach to filmmaking.
South Korean cinemagoer Yu Young-gi expressed excitement for the film's Oscar prospects, highlighting the intriguing connection between the South Korean and American senses portrayed in "Past Lives."
The film's exploration of cultural intersections has resonated with audiences, making it a compelling contender for accolades on the international stage.
