The Paris Olympic Committee recently unveiled Phrygians, their red mascot for the 2024 games. The Phrygian caps were worn by anti-monarchists and signified liberty and freedom. The mascots’ critics are upset that only 8% of the merchandise is manufactured in France. The rest of the material is being outsourced to China. A business owners' association has stated that the decision to outsource most of the material to China is an insult to the French companies and has demanded that all the merchandise be made in France instead.

The French government’s spokesperson, Olivier Veran, said they would prefer France to manufacture the merchandise, but France lacks the requisite raw materials and textile factories. He said they are working to get the raw materials and the capacity to make two million dolls in a few months. Many climate activists have also expressed dissatisfaction with the pollution generated by shipping the toys to France, disregarding the government’s pledge to take decisive action against global warming.
