How did scientists eliminate pancreatic cancer tumours in mice?
Researchers reported in the journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) that a triple combination therapy successfully wiped out pancreatic cancer tumours in laboratory mice. The approach tackled a long-standing issue in treatment: resistance, which often causes drugs to stop working within months.
The scientists combined an experimental drug, already approved for lung cancer—with a protein degrader. This strategy led to tumour disappearance across three different animal models, without significant side effects, as per a report.
“These studies open a path to designing new combination therapies that can improve survival for patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma [the most common pancreatic cancer]. These results point the way for developing new clinical trials,” the study authors stated.

Who led this breakthrough research?
The study was led by Mariano Barbacid, head of the experimental oncology group at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO). His team’s work drew international attention, including recognition from the Embassy of Spain in the UK.
“A team of scientists from the Spanish Cancer Research Centre, led by the renowned Dr Mariano Barbacid, has achieved the complete and permanent disappearance of pancreatic cancer in experimental models. This discovery could make a difference in the fight against this disease.”
Are human clinical trials coming next?
Despite the promising results, the researchers urged caution. Human trials have not yet begun, and the therapy is not ready for patients.
“It is important to understand that, although experimental results like those described here have never been obtained before, we are not yet in a position to carry out clinical trials with the triple therapy,” explained Barbacid as per a report.
