Ovidio Guzmán-López arrest: 29 people killed, planes attacked. Key details about El Chapo's son

At least 29 people were killed as the military operation to arrest Ovidio Guzmán-López, son of Mexican drugs kingpin "El Chapo", turned violent. As many as 10 soldiers and 19 suspects were killed, 35 military personnel were injured and 21 gunmen were arrested, BBC reported quoting the Mexican authorities.

López was arrested in Culiacán. He was later flown to Mexico City. Following the arrest, gang members of the drug cartel set vehicles on fire, blocked roads in Culiacan, known as Mexico cartel stronghold.

The arrest sparked wave of violence as gunmen started attacking planes at Sinaloa airport. Over 100 flights had to be cancelled.


Two Mexican Air Force aircraft were hit by armed gunmen from the cartel.

Ovidio Guzmán-López is the son dreaded gangster Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. "El Chapo" has been serving life sentence in the US. Ovidio Guzmán-López is nicknamed "The Mouse". He has three brothers.

Mexico's Defence Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval has revealed that Guzmán-López was captured after six-month surveillance operation backed by US officials.

A reward of up to $5 million/£4.2 million was put out by the US.


Earlier in 2019, Guzmán-López was arrested by security forces in Mexico. However, he was released.

According to US State Department, Guzmán-López and his brother Joaquín were heading the operations in the state of Sinaloa.

Guzmán-López had ordered the killing of popular Mexican singer for refusing to sing at his wedding, BBC reported quoting the US State Department.
