Over 50% Ukrainians think Donald Trump's efforts may lead to unjust peace: Survey

Over 50 per cent people in Ukraine fear that US President Donald Trump's efforts could lead to partly unjust or completely unfair peace in the region amid Russia's ongoing invasion in the country, a local pollster said.

As per the latest survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), the Ukrainians are critical of Trump's efforts to bring peace to the region, Reuters reported.

Survey results

In total, 32 per cent of respondents are expecting that the US President's efforts would rather bring "unjust peace, although with the fulfilment of some of Ukraine's demands".

Besides them, 22 per cent believe that this would ultimately result in "totally unjust peace".

On the other hand, a mere 3 per cent of the Ukranians are hopeful that Trump can bring peace to the region, while there were 15 per cent people who suggested that it would be "rather just peace, although with some concessions to Russia".

The findings of the survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) were based on the participation of a total of 1,326 people on the Ukrainian-held territory.

Donald Trump 'very angry'

In an interview with NBC News on Sunday, the US President said he was “pissed off” and “very angry” when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's leadership credibility was heavily criticised by their Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Trump said Putin's remarks were not going in the "right location.”

“If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault — which it might not be — but if I think it was Russia’s fault, I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia,” NBC News quoted Trump as saying.

Trump clarified that this means those buying oil from Russia will not be allowed to do business in the US.

His statement came after Putin last week demanded a transitional government in Ukraine that could potentially remove Zelenskyy from the top post in the war-torn region.

Earlier, Trump attacked Zelenskyy and said he was “sick” of the way the Ukrainian President has handled the years-long war.

Soon after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the then-US President Joe Biden had banned Russian oil imports. Russian oil being imported to the US has come down since then.

Trump has also suspended military aid and intelligence to Ukraine on a temporary basis.

The latest survey figures have highlighted that people in Ukraine have become less optimistic about Trump's efforts ever since his inauguration earlier this year.
