A massive landslide in western Sudan's Marra Mountains obliterated a village resulting in the death of over 1,000 people. The landslide devasted the area with rebel group Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, which has a stronghold in the Darfur region, claiming only one person in the affected village of Tarasin survived the natural catastrophe.

The Marra Mountains, one of the tallest in the country, is located in the Darfur region and has been receiving heavy rainfall for several days. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army leader Abdelwahid Mohamed Nour stated the landslide swept through the village on August 31. Asking the United Nations and international aid agencies to help in the relief work and in recovering the bodies, the rebel group added the village "has now been completely levelled to the ground," a Reuters report added.

Darfur, where the landslide-hit village is located, is the battleground of the bloody civil war and armed conflict in Sudan. No international aid organization has been able to operate in the region.
