Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a spin-off confirmed for 2028: Here's what to know about the Stranger Things prequel that has got fans absolutely hooked

The world of Stranger Things is far from over. Netflix has officially ordered a new live action spin off, giving fans another story to look forward to after the original series ended. The prequel Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is set in the 1950s, long before the Hawkins gang uncovered the town's supernatural secrets. The new series is scheduled to arrive in 2028.

What is Stranger Things prequel about?

The new series will explore a different period in the Stranger Things universe. Set decades before the events of the original show, it will introduce a new setting, a fresh group of heroes and villains, and a different supernatural story. The timeline also places it before the events of the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which explores Henry Creel's past in Hawkins in 1959. The information is taken from Netflix and Variety.

The Duffer Brothers confirmed the news on Stranger Things Day November 6, the annual celebration marking the date Will Byers disappeared in 1983.

“We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating,” say Matt and Ross Duffer. “It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new … actually, we’re not allowed to say any more. Now, on to casting. In the meantime — watch the skies, nerds!”

Who is making the new Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure

Kate Trefry, who worked on the original series and wrote The First Shadow, will serve as co creator, writer and showrunner. Joe Wright, known for Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and Darkest Hour, will direct the first three episodes and also serve as an executive producer.

Trefry said working with the Duffer Brothers again was a special opportunity.

“The Duffer Brothers gave me my first paying job in Hollywood, and it has been a joy and a fever dream ever since," says Trefry. “Now, it is my insane honor and privilege to be bringing this new chapter of Stranger Things to life alongside them and our incredible director, Joe Wright. With the support of Netflix and 21 Laps, we have had the time of our lives returning to all the horror, wonder and mystery of the flagship, while also telling a wholly new story, one we hope will blow your minds and break your hearts all over again. There are so many more mysteries to explore. Welcome to Other Worlds.”

Production will take place in New Mexico. Shawn Levy, Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling and Pavlina Hatoupis are also among the executive producers.

How does Other Worlds expand the Stranger Things universe?

Levy said the new series would keep the spirit of the original while exploring different characters, themes and mythology. Netflix's Jinny Howe also welcomed the project, saying the company was pleased to work again with the Duffer Brothers and Trefry. According to Netflix, the original series has attracted more than 1.2 billion views across its first four seasons. The franchise has also expanded through the animated series Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, which follows the Hawkins group in the winter of 1985.

Fans can revisit all five seasons of Stranger Things on Netflix while waiting for Other Worlds, which is expected to arrive in 2028.
