Demi Moore on Sunday night had a one-word response to her shocking loss at the Oscars 2025. The 62-year-old was being eyed as the frontrunner for the Best Actress honour at the 97th Academy Awards after bagging nearly all of the major awards, except for BAFTA, for her role as Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance.

However, Anora star Mikey Madison was announced as the surprise winner for the prestigious category.

As Madison was given the awards, cameras were quick enough to capture Moore's reaction to the same, Daily Mail reported.


Speaking about the moment, lip reader Nicola Hickling told the news outlet that Moore's one-word reaction was "nice". Hickling pointed out that Moore was not smiling when she said it. "Her body is almost nodding like she had to force herself to say it," the expert stated.

At the 97th Academy Awards, Madison and Moore were up against Fernanda Torres, Karla Sofia Gascon, and Cynthia Erivo in the category.

On social media, few users suggested that Moore looked visibly upset when she heard Madison being announced as the winner.

Fans upset over Moore's loss

Several of Moore's fans later expressed their disappointment on X. After the award was announced, the Elon Musk-owned platform was flooded with several posts claiming that Moore deserved the honour.

While one person stated that Moore was "robbed", another user stated that it was the "biggest snub" in the history of the Academy Awards.

Madison received the Best Actress award for her role of a sex worker in Anora.

While accepting the honour, Madison recognised the community on stage as she delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech.

Recognising and honouring the sex worker community, the 25-year-old said she will continue to "support and be an ally."

Holding the trophy in her hand, she called it a "very surreal" moment. She said that while she grew up in Los Angeles, Hollywood always "felt so far away from me, so to be here, standing in this room today, is really incredible.”

Madison, who has previously appeared in films like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Scream, also talked about her fellow nominees and noted that she was honoured to be recognised alongside the "thoughtful, intelligent, beautiful, breathtaking work of my fellow nominees."

On her win, Madison said it was a "dream come true" moment for her.

Anora focuses on the journey of a sex worker, who gets married to the son of a Russian businessman. The film, directed by Sean Baker, won five awards at Oscars 2025, including Best Picture and Best Director.
